GPT-4 Digs Deep into AI Art Trends- Beauty and AI

AI-generated art has recently been gaining popularity. In this blog, we will use a conversation with GPT-4 to analyze the growing interest in AI Art.

A Surge in Interest in AI Art

According to Google Trends, the search term “AI Art” experienced a sharp peak between December 4 and December 10, 2022.

AI Art Trend for 2022

What caused this sudden surge in popularity? This is a fascinating question which we are exploring in this blog.

The most plausible explanation for growth in AI Art trends could be the 2022 revolution in the quality of AI Art generators, which we described in our earlier blog post. While this was an obvious assumption, it had to be verified. Manually examining Google Trends and identifying factors that correlate with the peak between December 4 and December 10, 2022 seems like a reasonable approach to finding the key factor responsible for the surge of interest in AI Art. Our initial bet was that it could have been Stable Diffusion or Midjourney. The reality of the matter turned out to be more complex and surprising.

Potential Drivers of AI Art Popularity

Investigating the key drivers of trends is an intriguing task. It’s also fascinating to explore how GPT-4 can investigate these trends. We decided to employ GPT-4 as an assistant to help us unravel the mystery behind this sudden surge in interest. We set the context by asking GPT-4 our question in the most general form.

Question:

According to Google trends, searching for the term “AI Art” for the year 2022 shows a very sharp peak between Dec. 4 and Dec. 10. Do you have any idea how to explain this?

GPT-4:

I don’t have real-time browsing capabilities, but I can speculate on some possible explanations for the sharp spike in the search term “AI Art” between December 4 and December 10, 2022. Here are a few possibilities:

  • A high-profile AI Art event, exhibition, or sale: A major event such as an art exhibition, an auction featuring AI-generated art, or a prominent artist using AI in their work could have garnered significant media attention, leading to an increase in search interest.
  • Viral social media content: A piece of AI-generated art or an AI-related art project might have gone viral on social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok, driving a surge in searches for the term.
  • Celebrity or influencer endorsement: A well-known celebrity or influencer might have shared or endorsed AI-generated art, sparking curiosity and driving a surge in searches.
  • News coverage: There might have been a notable breakthrough or development in the field of AI-generated art, such as new research or technological advancements, leading to increased news coverage and public interest.
  • Seasonal interest: The timing of the spike suggests that it could be related to holiday gift-giving or year-end summaries of popular art and technology trends.
  • These are just a few potential reasons for the increase in search interest for the term “AI Art” during that time period. To determine the exact cause, one would need to investigate further by analyzing news articles, social media trends, and other relevant sources from that time frame.

    Introducing AI Art Generators

The most intuitively plausible explanation is extraordinary progress in AI Art generator technology and its coverage in the news (bullet #4). At first, it was almost obvious to us that the trend in popularity of some AI Art generators like Dall-e, Stable Diffusion, or Midjourney and the surge of their coverage on YouTube would explain the trend in the popularity of AI Art. We added these keywords to our Google trends analysis.

AI Art and AI Art Generators Trends

For completeness, we researched the web and identified the other most likely factors. The trend for AI Art exhibitions was perfectly flat. One event of the AI Painting winning AI Art exhibition was reported around September 2.

    Question:

The most prominent AI art generators are as follows:

Stable Diffusion: grew to prominence around Sep. 4 – Sep. 10. After that, the trend is flat.

Midjourney: grew to prominence on Aug. 7, and after that its trend stayed the same.

Dall-e: has a peak between June 12 and 18. After that, it has lower interest than the previous two.

The term “AI Art Exhibition” shows a flat and low trend over the year 2022. The news about an AI-generated painting winning an art competition came on September 2.

Can any of these events give a definite explanation for the sharp peak between Dec. 4 and Dec. 10 for the term AI Art?

    GPT-4:

Based on the information provided, it seems that none of these events directly coincide with the sharp peak in the search for “AI Art” between December 4 and December 10, 2022. The events mentioned happened earlier in the year and would not explain the spike in interest during that specific week in December.

It’s possible that there was another event or development during that week, which isn’t mentioned here, that led to the sudden surge in interest. Alternatively, there could be a combination of factors at play, such as increased public awareness of AI-generated art due to the cumulative effect of these earlier events, coupled with an additional trigger like a viral social media post or a new milestone in AI art generation.

To pinpoint the exact cause of the spike, further investigation would be required, such as looking into news articles, social media trends, and other relevant sources from that time frame.

ChatGPT: The Celebrity Influencer of AI Art!

The 2022 revolution in the quality of AI Art generators, such as Dall-e, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney, and the surge in their coverage on YouTube provided the foundation and the very possibility for the development of AI Art. However, it seems that some other event caused the spike in the AI Art trend. After we couldn’t find any AI Art specific trend that could serve as a potential explanation, we decided to think outside the box and entered the term ChatGPT itself.

AI Art and ChatGPT Trends - Beauty and AI

The volume for the term ChatGPT started growing very sharply on Nov. 27. From Dec. 4 – Dec.10, ChatGPT was at 45% while AI art was at 18%. Thus, the time of sharp growth for the term ChatGPT coincides with the time of sharp growth for the term AI Art. There is a clear correlation in the rise of trends for AI Art and ChatGPT. It is then reasonable to assume that abundant news coverage of ChatGPT somehow catalyzed public interest in AI Art. To avoid the usual complaints about incomplete data, we asked GPT-4 to assume that all potential influencers are included in the list.

    Question:

Suppose all significant potential influencers on the popularity of AI art are included in this list.

The volume for the term ChatGPT started growing very sharply on Nov. 27. From Dec. 4 – Dec. 10, ChatGPT was at 45% while AI art was at 18%. Thus, the time of sharp growth for the term ChatGPT coincides with the time of sharp growth for the term AI Art.

If you have to choose potential drivers of interest in AI Art only from the choices listed above, what would be your conclusion?

    GPT-4:

Based on the information provided, the most plausible explanation for the sharp peak in the search for “AI Art” between December 4 and December 10, 2022, would be the increase in interest in the term “ChatGPT” during the same period.

Since the growth in interest for ChatGPT coincides with the growth in interest for AI Art, it’s possible that there was a connection between the two events. Perhaps people were associating ChatGPT with AI-generated art, or there might have been a notable use case of ChatGPT in the context of AI art that garnered attention during that time.

However, it’s important to note that correlation doesn’t necessarily imply causation, and further investigation would be needed to confirm if there was a direct link between the two trends or if it was a coincidental overlap in timing.

GPT-4 supported our later conclusion that the introduction of ChatGPT served as a catalyst for interest in AI Art. The 2022 revolution in the quality of AI Art generators, which we described in our earlier blog post, was certainly an important factor. It provided the foundation and the very possibility for the development of AI Art. While it was a necessary factor for the popularity trend to exist, it is the trend in popularity of ChatGPT that explains the surge in interest.

    Comparing GPT-4 and GPT-3.5

We conducted the same analysis of AI Art trends using both GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, and we observed key differences between the two. GPT-3.5 suggested three potential drivers of AI Art popularity but didn’t pinpoint any specific factor as the primary cause. In contrast, GPT-4 not only provided a broader range of five potential drivers of AI Art popularity, but it also confidently identified the most plausible explanation for the observed trend: the simultaneous increase in interest in ChatGPT, which may have contributed to the heightened interest in AI Art during that period.

This comparison highlights the progress made in GPT-4, which is less verbose and more decisive than its predecessor, GPT-3.5. The ability to provide a clearer, more focused analysis enables GPT-4 to better assist users in their research and decision-making processes. As AI continues to evolve, we can expect even more improvements in conversational capabilities, providing users with increasingly valuable insights and information.
